5 Style Lessons Courtesy of Rachel Roy

5 Style Lessons Courtesy of Rachel Roy

Here on The City, we are all about cultivating personal style, luckily, we can look to some of our favorite celebrities for a few style lessons.

I have such a girl crush on designer Rachel Roy. She embodies personality traits I aspire to have, not even counting her success in her professional life. Plus, she’s gorgeous with full brows. Yay for thick eyebrows!

This year I have decided that I want my style to be a little more Rachel Roy meets Jenna Lyons and less Vanessa Hudgens, if that makes sense. More refined.

So, here’s to hoping that applying these style tips courtesy of Rachel Roy will help us achieve that. Let’s get into it, shall we?

1. Get The Basics

Rachel Roy speaks often of stocking your closet with basics that flatter your body. But not with trendy pieces, stuff that you will want to wear season after season. The funny thing is, her basics are all through out this post in the other points. You’ll see.

2. Dress As The Women You Aspire To Be

How much do you love that Rachel wears her own pieces? I know I do. You are the best representative of your brand. In this case, she designs for the woman that you aspire to be. I just realized that I’ve been seeking this kind of inspiration with the blogs I read. A lot of them are not my style, they’re always so fancy and that’s just not me but I would love to be. There’s no reason that we can’t be either.

3. Chase Inspiration

I watched an interview with Rachel where she told StyleList that she is constantly chasing inspiration with not only the way she designs but her personal style. She loves the idea of wearing opposites that somehow balance themselves out. Like, making sense of things that don’t necessarily ‘go,’ but you figure out how to make it work.

4. Make The Impossible Possible

In the same interview with StyeList, Rachel said that she aspires to ‘make the impossible possible.’ Her reasoning is you should be able to take an idea and execute it but not in a way that makes it look like you’re wearing a costume. You have to admire her fearlessness with that pajama-looking outfit.

5. Know Your Body

… and dress to flatter it. It really is tempting to wear everything you see on everyone else, especially if it looks really good. But is that your style? Does it agree with your lifestyle? And most importantly, your body? Learn which trends to sit out and which trends to run with while staying true to you.

Isn’t Rachel amazing? You have to love a women who works so hard while looking great and raising her family.

If you have a couple of minutes, watch the video below of Rachel preparing her Spring/Summer 2012 collection for New York Fashion Week. It will make you love her even more:

Sigh.
