5 Style Lessons Courtesy of Diane von Furstenberg

Here on The City, we are all about cultivating personal style, luckily, we can look to some of our favorite celebrities for a few style lessons.

Designer Diane von Furstenberg is the stuff that legend, relevance and a dash of timelessness are made of. Wouldn’t you say? The woman never stops working! She just released a book with Camilla Morton titled, Diane von Furstenberg and the Tale of the Empress’ New Clothes. Ms. DVF was in charge of the illustrations that accompanies this updated fairy tale. Consider that added to my never-ending list of books to read.

And then, I was flipping through the January issue of InStyle magazine and who do I see showing off her fabulous Paris apartment? You know it, DVF. Looking at the designer, her style gives clues of how she lives her life and it can’t help but be reflected in what she wears (designs, too, yes?). So today, I want to share five style lessons that we can learn from the queen of wrap dresses.

1. Mix Like with Like

On Monday, I wondered why I couldn’t seem to mix prints in a big way, but seem to be all for it when it comes to mixing a bunch of the same things together. Well my friends, this seems to be the DVF way. Diane suggests wearing different prints in the same colors for a subtler way to mix prints. Seems easy enough, right?

2. Be Fluid

When it comes to your clothing, according to mama Diane, it should move. Gone are the days of the stiff and starched power suits. Your clothing should be fluid and comfortable, you should be able to move and so should it. Fluid doesn’t necessarily translate to sloppy. Right? Olivia Pope prefers fluid fabrics and she is everything.

3. Raaaawr

I absolutely love how mainstream leopard print has become. Designers like Diane use, not just my beloved leopard, but all sorts of animal prints in their collections and I am here for it. Remember those dalmatian print booties I wanted from Macy’s? They are sold out in my size now, (boooo) but believe me, I am looking to branch out when it comes to wearing animal prints.

4. Timelessness is a ‘Thing’

I know people–I’m guilty of this, too–associate shying away from trends as looking boring but that just isn’t the case. Remember when we talked about how a dress that Grace Kelly was photographed wearing in the 60s could have easily been DVF? It’s okay to have a uniform of what works and stick to it. You’ll never go out of style. Look at Anna Wintour.

5. Fashion is a Fantasy

Fashion isn’t just about what you put on your body. Well, I guess it does if you’re basic, but it’s more to that. It conveys how you’re feeling, your mood, what you want to project or pretend to be with your clothing. It’s like knowing the power that thoughts have, they become things. So why not do the same with your clothing, right? I’m all for it. Dress as if…

What say you? Is Ms. Diane everything or is she everything? Question, is it just me or do you feel funny calling a woman of a particular age by her first name? Like your mom is going pop out of no where, and be like, you know I taught you better than to be out here calling women by their first names. Even as an adult?

Just me?

Oh.

I LOVE Diane, better known as my fairy godmother! Her style is evolutionary and timeless. My admiration for her was set in stone after meeting her at her Meatpacking store during Fashion’s Night Out. My life would be complete if my closet was filled with her designs. Great post!

I love me some DVF! She is definitely timeless and so are her designs. However, those aren’t zebra booties…I’m not sure what they are, but zebra’s have stripes. Some sort of spotted four legged friend, but certainly not a zebra.

OMG, I meant dalmatian! Thank you so much for pointing that out, I’m going to correct it, right now.
