This is going to sound a little blasphemous considering this is a style blog butVogue is not one of my monthly must-reads. I don’t subscribe and it depends who’s on the cover if I pick it up.

I just don’t see myself in the fantasy that the glossy is selling. It could be said that the fashion dream that Vogue is selling is supposed to be unattainable and that right there is the point but that’s just not for me.

I like something inspirational yet attainable. And that brings me to Ms. Anna Wintour. She rules the fashion kingdom yet her style is quite simple.

Inspirational, yet attainable.

On the eve of New York Fashion Week, let’s take a minute to learn five style lessons courtesy of Anna Wintour.

1. It’s Ok To Like What You Like

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Anna Wintour has had a variation of the same uniform since the 80s. For a reason, it works. She likes her three pieces with a skirt (or dress) and her sunglasses. What works for you that you can keep incorporating into your signature style?

2. … And Be Impractical With Your Style

Peta is always after someone for wearing fur. Has that stopped Ms. Wintour? No, sir! Though, I can’t imagine someone coming up to her and throwing red paint on her fabulous fur. What do you like to wear that the people around you might not understand? Do you wear it anyway?

3. Choose Classic Silhouettes In Out-There Patterns

One way to make sure that everything looks good no matter the trend or the time period is to choose a classic silhouette. Even if you are wearing the craziest pattern, the silhouette will save you as long as it is classic and flatters your body. Just think of the 80s and how much better the pictures would be if everyone stuck to classic silhouettes, right?

4. Prints, Textures and Patterns–Oh, My

Number three leads me to my next point. Don’t be afraid to embrace prints, colors, texture, patterns, anything to liven up your basics. Sure, most of the time it looks like Anna is just wearing a simple A-line skirt, but the pattern or texture is what makes the outfit pop.

5. Fashion Can Be An Armor

Your style doesn’t just give the world a peek of who you are without ever having to speak. It can protect you, too. Anna Wintour has repeatedly said that her sunglasses have become a bit of an armor for her. Though it may make her appear standoffish or unapproachable, I think it just weeds out a lot of shanagains. Almost like she demands the best and the sunglasses shield her from those not ready to bring it. What do you wear that that provides comfort or says that you aren’t to be messed with?
