5 Style Lessons Courtesy of The Women of AMC’s Mad Men

Here’s a little something about me I bet you didn’t know: I am a history geek.

I’ve always been. When I was like 11 or 12, I went through a huge historical obsession with the Holocaust brought on my reading The Diary of Anne Frank.

Now that I think about it, my love for history probably started with American Girl dolls.  When I was six, my mom and I (starting with Addy) would read the doll’s book series before I could get the doll for Christmas. I ended up with most of the dolls that way. And I’ve been hooked on history ever since.

As a result, I go crazy over anything period-based. Mad Men is one of those period-based shows I just can’t seem to get enough of.  Not just for the historical context that the writers weave so seamlessly through the show but for the clothing.

Is Betty Draper’s wardrobe not everything? What about Joan? Back then she was probably considered pretty edgy. So it’s safe to say that they are five style lessons that we can take from Mad Men.

Let’s get into it, shall we?

3. Color Is Always Current

The ladies of Mad Men sure don’t shy away from color, even that Peggy. She doesn’t take herself so seriously that she can’t liven up her look with a little color. Joan does bold colors beautifully as Betty does pastels rather gracefully. Are you scared of color?

I love how fashion plays such a key role in giving away the mindset of the characters. Joan is always in body-skimming outfits while Peggy wore a tie on Sunday. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but fashion is really not such an unconscious process of getting dressed as we think. Even the people who think they aren’t saying anything are saying something. What are you saying?
