22 Aug 5 Style Lessons Courtesy of Paris, France
Here on The City, we are all about cultivating personal style, luckily, we can look to some of our favorite celebrities for a few style lessons.
… Why yes, I did learn a few style lessons courtesy of an entire city. Here’s the thing. I think I’ve been away from here too long. I’m kind of nervous posting. I wasn’t sure what angle to take when sharing the pictures but I knew that I wanted to, and wanted it to fit in with what I typically write here. So I decided to kill two ideas with one post. It’s Wednesday, right? Why not ‘5 Style Lessons…’ The thing about Paris is, it’s better than you could have ever imagined. All those books that you thought gave you a clear picture of the place? Wrong. Seeing it for myself was awesome. Literally. And while New York is great, especially if you have a dollar, a dream and the drive to build the two, Paris is beautiful. So much so that is was really hard not to be inspired by all that I saw. Hence, 5 style lessons we can learn from Paris.
1. Do It Big
When Gustave Eiffel built the tower in 1889 (you know I like my history), it was supposed to impress visitors of an exhibit. Um, why can’t we apply that same principle to our style? I’m not saying dress to impress anyone other than yourself but if you’re going to get dressed, you might as well get dressed. And sidenote, for as impressive as the tower is during the day, it is something else at night, let me tell you…
2. Be Opulent
… Versailles (see a tour here) was kiiiiind of a big deal for me. You guys know that I have minor obsession with Marie Antoinette. I was excited to visit her retreat away from the castle–Petit Trianon (you can see a tour here)–but walking through the gardens I kept imagining it was during the Chanel Resort show (see here). And how could I not get excited to think of those legendarymodels of Versailles? When you see all this opulence, it’s kind of hard not to want to spruce up your everyday look.
3. Simple Is A Form of Elegance
Coco Chanel simplified the way women dress in ways that we don’t even think about today. She was a fan of a simple black dress, wide leg pants, piling on the baubles and never being fully dressed without perfume. Visiting her home–only the outside, commoners aren’t allowed inside–explained so much to me. For instance, the scent Rue de Cambon? That’s the street where she lived. Simple isn’t always such a bad thing.
4. Everything Old Is New Again
One of my favorite things we saw while in Paris was the Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs exhibit at Les Arts Decoratifs. I had no idea how innovative Marc Jacobs had been when took over as artistic director in 1997 such an established not to mention old money company like Louis Vuitton. I love the way the exhibit brought the two men and their visions together without compromising either.Love, love, loved! You know what else I loved? Meeting Vogue Brazil writerCostanza Pascolato who was coiffed to perfection whiling explaining to my mom and I why she thought the exhibit was magical.
p.s. you can see why the exhibit is magical yourself and watch this video. Remember Louisa from The City? Who was supposed to take Olivia Palermo’s job? She’s the host and it’s super cute.
5. Be Timeless
The thing that got me most when it came to Paris and it’s beautiful buildings was that it seemed like everything was old! And, I’m not talking 1912 old either. The Sacre-Coeur’s construction started in 1875 and still looked as if it was built yesterday. Fun fact, in the book I’m reading The Beautiful Fall–that I picked up at Shakespeare and Company but more on that later–mentioned that Yves Saint Laurent went to school here. Paris is one big history lesson and I liiiive for it.
I completely understand why Paris is considered the fashion capital of the world. Completely. Remember the Coco Chanel quote: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”
To which I say, chuuuuurch!
