We’re about to have a geek moment. Just warning you.

One of my favorite movies is Breakfast at Tiffany’s based off of Truman Capote’s novel. For Christmas, Serena got me 5 a.m. Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the Dawn of the Modern Woman, this made me appreciate the film so much more. There was this whole chapter dedicated to Holly Golightly’s, played by Audrey Hepburn, wardrobe. It was a big thing that a costume designer, notably Edith Head (who felt slighted by this decision) wasn’t used but an actual designer– Hubert de Givenchy. Who was French! Why would she need French clothing? In New York? Why did she need to be so glamorous? Why is she wearing black, and so informally at that, the production studio needed to know.

What they didn’t know was the effect that this film would have not just at the box office but in modern day society. Did you know that movie set in motion that aspirational yet attainable glam that we now associate with Carrie Bradshaw? Or the little black dress?

This is exactly what I thought of when I saw this designer dress in T.J. Maxx’s The Runway department. I’ve never really been fond of black. I own a black dress or two, but this one, and I wish it wasn’t cloudy so that you could really appreciate it, is something special. The skirt is reflective and looks like sequins. I really want to wear this with a white collared shirt underneath and a bow tie. That would be my take on the little black dress.
