On Monday, I worked my very first red carpet for the premiere of Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s. I just knew that I had the perfect shoes to #GetScattered in, a pair of J.Crew Sequin heels.

Here’s the thing about working a red carpet, though, you’re standing for, like three hours as the celebrities are ushered through the line of photographers and journalists all vying for their attention. It’s no joke. You can see how it wouldn’t be smart to navigate in sequin shoes. You’re on the other side of the velvet rope, dear. Do you your job.

I didn’t think about any of that when I got dressed in the morning, though. I was like ‘what’s the most whimsical thing I could wear that would prepare me mentally to meet fabulous people wearing fabulous outfits all out in support of a fabulous department store.’

A dress.

And sequins.

I don’t feel good about myself in pants. Or flats. So I didn’t wear just one of the above. I went for both. I stuck with it, even when the weather man said that it would only be a high of 60 degrees. Even when it started to drizzle. I just decided to put my shoes in my bag. I’d wear riding boots, over-the-knee socks with my lace Rodarte for Target dress, and denim jacket.

So, yes, I was committed.

Right up until my boss prepped me for the event and told me to make sure that I was wearing comfortable shoes. “You can change into your sequins to watch the movie,” she says noticing my face, as I looked longingly at the shoes. And back down at my scuffed riding boots like they had wronged me.

I should have just worn flats that I could have easily stuffed into my bag when it was time to change shoes. So it was my fault really.

If I was going to watch Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s in a theater with Tommy Hilfiger, Pat Cleveland, Vera Wang, Christian Siriano, Nanette Lepore, Betty Halbreich, and Linda Fargo (Bergdorf’s fashion director who said that no one had ever asked her my question) that meant I had to wear sequins.

So, I sat in the theater, watching in those same scuffed up boots that I walked past Bergdorf Goodman in, smiling to myself. It was definitely better than sequins.
