Four weeks ago, today, I had one of those perfect New York moments, that I’m so fond of. I was sent out with the task of interviewing street style legend Tziporah (like the one in the Bible and where Sephora gets it’s name) Salamon. Let me tell you, she is a treat!

She dropped all kinds of jewels during our walk all over her neighborhood and as she sat me on her bed to show off her clothing as I peered over her scrapbooks. I loved the way she weaved her relationship with God throughout our conversation without feeling like she was being preachy or uptight. She realizes that she has a gift with her sense of style, one that breaks barriers and acts as a conversation starter. She told me she’s even received letters from people all over the world, thanking her. By being exactly who she is, she gave them permission to live their truth.

All from clothes. Who said that fashion was all superficial?

One of the most pivotal things Bill Cunningham’s muse said to me, was that God speaks to her in clothing. We were walking through Riverside Park, when she stopped, touched her necklace and said, “Where God shows up in my life,” she started, “is in my clothing.” “Look at this necklace and the way it works with this fabric. It’s just perfection. Now, I couldn’t have done that, that’s God. I mean, yes, my eye saw that the necklace was fabulous, but I couldn’t have seen that this would go. I just knew it was a great necklace and one day I would wear it. But that happens to me all the time, all the time. And that’s God. That’s how God appears in my life. And I am very lucky because God appears very often.”

Can I get a Beyonce-approved ‘yaaaaasssssss‘ for Tziporah, though?

I know that you should never need another person to validate you but can I just say, this validated the living mess out of me. Again, I say, God shows up exactly where you are to meet you. In my case, God appears to me in glitter. Oh, and sequins. Leopard and faux leather, too.
