5 Style Lessons Courtesy of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Here on The City, we are all about cultivating personal style, luckily, we can look to some of our favorite celebrities for a few style lessons.

Two weeks ago, tomorrow, I saw the Hunger Games: Catching Fire. I meant to watch the first one beforehand, but I didn’t have time, so I ventured into the theater ready for a night with Covergirl and friend/Hunger Games fiend of a friend. Why didn’t anyone tell me that whole basis of this series was kids killing each other?! Oh, #SpoilerAlert. Is everyone else okay with this?

Then there’s the fact that the Hunger Games could actually be a metaphor for real life and we’re too preoccupied with the Kardashians to notice.

But once I was able to wrap my mind around the above, I was able to appreciate… the fashuns, er fashion. I wish I could take credit for this but as I was on the train home, I guess I gushed a bit too much about each of the character’s style because Justine told me that I should write a 5 Style Lessons post.

So, here we are. Ready? Don’t worry, I won’t write any Catching Fire spoilers.

Film Review The Hunger Games Catching Fire

1. Eff the Rules

When Effie Trinket, District 12’s tributes’ escort, teetered onto the screen in her high heels with her glitter hair and outfit straight off of Alexander Mcqueen’s runway, I knew that I wouldn’t take my eyes off of her whenever she was on the screen. She is grandeur at its best and I live for it. Tone down for what?

2. Speak Through Your Clothes

I like to think that your personal style is an actual reflection of the person that you are. Ms. Katniss Everdeen up there, District 12’s tribute, constantly reminded me during the film that she was the edgy, cool girl who thought she could beat the system with touches of leather, Alexander McQueen, and um, flames.

3. Glitter Whenever

Another thing no one warned me about: the men, like Cinna here, all had such strong beauty moments. I mean, I guess this isn’t too far off from Lenny Kravitz’s preferred black eyeliner, but seeing gold eyeliner on Katniss’ stylist made me question why I thought my clothes were the only thing allowed to glitter. Sparkly eyeliner, anyone?

4. Color Outside the Lines

A week or two ago, my job had a beauty closet clean out resulting in hundreds of products spread out across our kitchen tables. One of those products, hot pink Anastasia Beverly Hills brow gel, and I joked that I wanted take it and channel Caesar Flickerman, Panem’s version of Ryan Seacrest, and his lavender brows to match his hair. I was only half-kidding. I always thought colored brows belonged on the pages of a magazine editorial but I’d be willing to color outside the lines with my brows.

5. Smile!

Most important, Effie had it right when she told the Tributes, “chins up, smiles on!” No one cares what you’re wearing if you look miserable.

May the odds be in your favor, when it comes to adapting these style lessons. Hehe. I couldn’t help myself. Have you seen any of the Hunger Games? Who has your favorite look?
