04 Feb In Defense of Carrie Bradshaw
I’m feeling pretty nostalgic about my life here in the city. I somehow missed my year anniversary (it was the 22nd), between that and my upcoming birthday, I just want to lay in bed, watch Sex and the City and eat cupcakes–post Fashion Week perhaps we can revisit this?
Despite being off air for nearly a decade–nine years to be exact–Sex and the City ended after 6 seasons on HBO, Carrie Bradshaw finds herself being constantly picked apart by the Internet.
And I don’t understand why.

Sure, Carrie had a tendency to obsess, had a hard time choosing to save versus snatching up the latest pair of Manolos, and should have married Aidan instead of Big (her shoes were way too amazing to be running all over NYC chasing some man who had no problem up and quitting her), but she was herself. And it was genuine.
She made mistakes, allowing herself to be vunerable whether with her writing or in her relationships with both men and women.
There’s something freeing about that. Living your truth invites others (and gives them the courage) to do the same.
Now, obviously, I’m biased, considering my blog was clearly influenced by my love for the series coupled with wanting to live in New York. But honestly, I wouldn’t want to be Carrie outside of being a fabulously well-dressed writer behind a Macbook working through my thoughts.
Not having a savings account in New York terrifies me. All too recently, I’ve seen examples of people are rich in clothes but cash poor. This is reoccurring theme in fashion, it seems. What did Kanye say? Things we buy to cover up what’s inside? No sir. Won’t be me, Carrie.
I don’t want to broadcast my dating life for all of the world to see. Yall can have me. And my thoughts, which, to be honest, is the best part of me, anyway.
I will say, Carrie, you were onto something with your group of friends. You were a hot, annoying *ss mess sometimes and in being so, I felt confident that I could make it here. Oh, and Elle? Yes, girl’s night is a thing. Call me spoiled but I have the best time out with my friends and I appreciated seeing Carrie’s friendships play such an integral part of the show. Plus, it’s just nice to see flawed people prevail. Since when did entertainment have to be so serious and true to real life?
Watch one episode of Sex and the City, and tell me, are you not entertained?! What’s your take on Carrie and co?
