24 Feb Why Don’t You… Wear Metal Heels?
‘Why Don’t You’ is my weekly tribute to legendary editor Diana Vreeland who penned a column of the same name for Harper’s Bazaar for 26 years begging, “Don’t just be your ordinary dull self. Why don’t you be ingenious and make yourself into something else?”
I hate the sound of walking on metal. It usually means that one (or both) of my taps came off of the heel of my pump, somewhere in the city, leaving me walking on a nail head.
One of the worst sounds in the world.
The other day, I was building outfit boards on Pinterest for a project at work when I noticed that I’d been scrolling past a plethora of shoes with metal-looking heels. Not the entire shoe, just the heel.
Would you wear metal heels?
I would. The pair that sold me, Kate Spade Suede Neptune pumps, have a timeless silhouette complete with a round toe, made edgy with a sculpted metal heel.
*insert lovestruck emoji here*
Coincidently, my mother, as she often does, sent me a screenshot of a shoe and wrote “interested?” under it in iMessage. It was a velvet mule and an ankle strap, with you guessed it woo, a gold metal-looking heel. It made its debut during New York Fashion Week Fall 2014. A partnership between Aldo Rise and London-based fashion label Ostwald Helgason, the shoe was inspired by artists Joseph Beuys and Roy Lichtenstein. The best part? It’s on sale right now!
Isn’t that funny how that worked out?
What say you? Is this a trend that you see yourself slipping into?
