The Perfect Scent

The Perfect Scent

I’m a marketer’s dream.

I completely buy into stories.

I’m looking for the perfect new scent. I’ve been looking for just the one that’s going to capture what I have to say.

How to chose a signature scent

I know, I know.

Scents don’t speak.

But I want mine to. I’d love to be able to be one of those women who have a signature scent, you smell them coming. There is a whiff of them in the air when they leave.

The closest that I’ve come to making anything a signature smell good is Jo Malone’s Red Roses. It smells luxe and powder-y without being something that makes me think of a grandmother—though, that isn’t always horrible.

It’s not that I’ve fallen out of love with the scent. I just want something that’s a a bit more reflective of who I am now. Something a little more complex.

There’s just this one that I can’t stop thinking about: Bond No. 9’s Perfumista Avenue.

By the brand’s own accord, the scent was “formulated for women—and specifically for a New York breed of woman who is stunning, bold, sexy, fearless, and daring; who knows what she wants, who is passionate, forthright and assured. She looks the part too, dressing with style and pizzazz. But while she may be polished and manicured, she’s a bit insouciant too.”

Well, that may not be me exactly, right now, but that’s really close to the sort of woman that I aspire to be. See what I mean about being a marketer’s dream?

Plus, “Pefumista Avenue was made for women everywhere who exhibit a New York state of mind. Super-strong and determined, this is an orientalist, leather-tinged blend that modernizes the breathtaking fresh, ultra-feminine rose (New York State’s official flower)”—who knew?!

The hint of something I couldn’t quite put my finger on? Rose, all grown up. It’s tinged with leather. Just what I need. It would be perfect layered over my Jo Malone Red Roses bar soap and body oil.

Basically, this scent is the current me, in a faux leather skirt, Yeti coat, beret and Kenzo clutch, all grown up.

The only problem is this pretty hot pink bottle is a nice chunk of change.

Sigh.

What do you smell like? Does it fit you?

I’ve also been going through the “scent struggle.” Lately though, Tocca from Sephora has been my go to. Clean, fresh, feminine.

Oh, goooood choice. I love Tocca! So soft and refreshing. I love using their hand creams and body washes.

I’ve personally never found anything that worked so well and defined me so perfectly as Rihanna Reb’l Fleur (the black bottle not the red.) Ripe fruits & florals with musky vanilla, patchouli & amber. My friends automatically think of me when they smell it and I’ve been told I should never try another perfume because it’s “not me.” Although Fancy by Jessica Simpson is a second runner up.

“My grandmother in Barbados used to call me her Rebel Flower, over the years, I layered many different scents to get something that was truly my own. But I wanted…something that said ‘Rihanna was here.’ Something delicious and special, a fragrance with subtle hints that linger and leave a sexy memory.”

Listen, I’d be using anything Rihanna put out with hopes it was really her #BlackGirlMagic in a bottle for me to dose myself in. Awww, I love that your friends know your smell!! Good choice.
