14 Apr He’s The Best Thing About MTA
I have a favorite train conductor.
He’s usual on an older 6 train. The ones that are typically annoying during rush hour. They’re smaller than the newer ones and the spacing is weird so everyone ends up crowding by the door, which makes it hard for people to get on or off, holding up the train from leaving the station.
This, according to New York’s Mass Transit Authority, is the reason for massive delays this season.
You can imagine how annoying this must be during rush hour when the 6 (along with the 4/5) is responsible for transporting more people than the Chicago, Boston, and Los Angeles systems combined.
But when I hear his voice, it makes me smile. I wonder if he has children or grandchildren and if he reads to them in the animated voice that booms throughout the train.
I wonder how he manages to stay upbeat. For a little perspective, some conductors all but cuss you on if they can get their doors shut due to congestion.

But mostly, I wonder if he knows how infectious his voice is, which makes me think his spirit is, too.
I don’t know if I’m weird for recognizing his voice, but it’s the little things, y’all. He drove me to work on the day I turned 28, so I knew things were off to a good start.
He may be the best thing about MTA.

Posted at 10:21h, 21 AprilI feel like ever since I’ve written this, I’ve ridden his train like 3 times in a week. I rode with him this morning! I hope next time you’re here, we hear it. It’s so interesting, like you know he tells the best stories and jokes.
