14 Aug That’s My Color
One of my most treasured possessions is a book I bought at Shakespeare and Co on my first trip to Paris.
Alicia Drake’s Beautiful Fall: Lagerfeld, Saint Laurent, and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris follows the rise of two men who would change fashion forever—Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent—through delicious snippets of gossip, bringing fashion history to life.
I’m always fascinated with how fashion people vacation (I can’t wait to tell you about Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan’s Shelter Island home!). Because it’s never really just a vacation. They come away from the reprieve with a new look, a new idea, a new something.
For Saint Laurent that place was Jardin Majorelle in Marrakesh, Morocco. A 12-acre botanical garden designed by French artist Jacques Majorelle in the 1930s. Saint Laurent would visit the location with the likes of Andy Warhol, Bianca Jagger, Loulou de la Falaise, and Paloma Picasso.
The garden is famous for it’s usage of a particular shade of blue. My shade of blue.
“That’s your color,” Angel said, complimenting my nails as we sipped wine on Shelter Island. “Cici’s that color, right?”
She is, just like most of my apartment.
Maybe there is something to this particular shade of blue?
“When I discovered Marrakech, it was an extraordinary shock. The city taught me colour,” Saint Laurent said.
The fashion designer bought blue garden in 1980 and when he died in 2008, his ashes were spread there.

Two Fridays ago, the designer would have been 79. Coincidently, I was wearing that shade of blue on nails.

p.s. Style.com’s (RIP) former editor-in-chief, now the digital director at W, finally broke Hedi Slimane’s silence. This is the designer’s first interview since taking over at Saint Laurent. It’s a #longread but a really interesting look at the history and future of the brand. Click here to read.
