01 Oct 5 Style Lessons Courtesy of Morgan Pitts
New York is full of those girls. You know the oneson the train, ahead of you in the line for coffee, on the Gram with an aspirational feed you cant help but fall face-first intothat leave you wondering why didnt I think to wear that? These are their closets. Welcome to 5 Style Lessons.
Im going to tell you a secret. I have an excel sheet full of brown girls who work in fashion. It started out as a list of editors and reporters I admire but has grown to include women working in all facets of fashion. Ive titled it #BlackGirlMafia and I am constantly updating it with girls who will no doubt be movers and shakers in this citys $1.4 billion industry. Morgan Pitts is on that list.
Not to say that she isnt already making moves. @cosMORGpolitan is an e-commerce associate at Gucci and the creator of the award-winning hashtag, #BlackGirlsWhoBlog, an online community that supports, celebrates and creates a sense of connection for black women in the blogosphere.
In her Midtown apartment with a gorgeous view and an even better closet, Morgan walked me through her favorite pieces and spouted off her tips for looking effing amazing in the city that requires you put your best foot forward (it helps that hers is in Chanel).
Ready? The revamped 5 Style Lessons starts now.
1. Its All About the Unconventional Staples
Morgan has a pair of Birkenstocksfashions new classic summer sandalbut she has the metallic J.Crew version as opposed to one of the standard colorways. Her Louis Vuitton Neverfull? To keep a bit of individuality, she didnt get the traditional monogram or Damier print. Its okay to go for the classics, just look for ways to incorporate your personality. Right, Morgan?
2. Comfort is Cute
She doesnt shy away from sneakers, even opting to wear her favorite pair of Nikes for her first time attending New York Fashion Week. Its all about how you style them (she added a statement coat).
3. Elevate with Outerwear
When it gets cold in New York, people wont necessarily see your outfit, but they will see your coat. Your outerwear is everything. It will make the whole look. You could be wearing jogging pants and sneakers but easily take your look to the next level with a statement coat, she said gesturing to the pale pink ASOS mohair coat, that hung on the closet door behind her, wrist full of Tiffany & Co and David Yurman bracelets jingling.
4. Fashion is Fun
Sequins! she said, reaching into her closet to out a pale pink J.Crew sequin t-shirt that I had been eyeing. Have fun, dont take it too seriously! Wear what you like and most importantly, what makes you feel good.
5. Labels are for Clothes, Not People
You dont have to define yourselfor your style, Morgan said, hanging a Chanel-esque J.Crew jacket next to a pair of Adidas track pants. Oh, Im preppy, oh, Im sporty, oh, Im her voice trails off. You can be all of that.
Morgan has aspirations to become a creative director and Im sure its only a matter of time before we see her name on the masthead in one of our favorite glossies. This is one to watch, yall. But, then again, Im sure shed already have your eye considering her wardrobe.
What do you think of Morgans style? Her closet? Do you like the revamped series? Let me know something in the comments!
