14 Dec A Ride Back in Time
On Sunday, me and the guy I’m dating took advantage of Metropolitan Transit Authority’s annual holiday tradition. Every year, MTA put its popular vintage trains on the rails for Sunday rides.
The trains are dubbed the “Shopper’s Special.” They’re a throwback to the days when the city’s residents rode trains with rattan seats, ceiling fans, bulb lighting, and drop-down windows from the 1930s to the 1970s.
Y’all know I’m a daydreamer, right? So, every time the train went through a tunnel, I was thinking about what it would be like to be a woman riding in a fancy hat and gloves. Perhaps on the way to the library or to meet a man for a date. This was definitely a ride back in time for me.
There was even a conductor (or maybe he was the engineer?) on board. He was wearing what the job would have required the man operating the train to wear back then!
I love New York during the holidays. It just feels so magical.
You can ride the train for yourself on its final go-round this Sunday, December 17th. Click here for departure times. If you can’t make it then, the trains are always on display at Transit Museum, 99 Schermerhorn Street in Brooklyn, Tuesday through Friday 10am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 5pm.
