17 Mar A Rainy Day at the Museum
I remember asking Bill Cunningham’s muse Tziporah Salmon about developing her eye for fashion.
She paused for a minute, and then said, “you know, you’re a writer, so you read writing that inspires you. You delve into the craft as a consumer, a fan, which may not feel like it, but works to better your product.”
“I look at fashion similarly. It’s art so I visually ingest works by the greats, you know, Monet, Picasso, I’ll spend a day in my favorite wing at the Met. You begin to learn what you like. How colors work together, how to play around with textures, that’s what elevates your style,” she said with a twist of her wrist.
That’s just what me and my boy did on Saturday. It was overcast and rainy in New York. It felt good to not have to be anywhere or do anything. The past couple weekends felt like I was cramming in as much as I could with little regard to my body or sleep schedule.
It felt good to explore.
To see new things.
Like the Frenchman Xavier Veilhan’s “Producers” exhibit at Galerie Perrotin (right in my hood at Madison and 74th!). The visual artist used 3-D imagery to pay a “silent homage to music and sound by presenting a section of individuals that invented the global sound of our times.”
Specifically, (unmasking the duo behind) Daft Punk, Rick Rubin, The Neptunes, Quincey Jones, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Nigel Godrich, and Giorgio Moroder.
I loved the visual representation of how Veilhan perceived sound but when I stepped in front of it to get a closer look, I knocked into it, causing it to sway a little bit, catching the attention of the gallery’s, um, attendant?
He didn’t kick me out but we took that as our cue to leave, walking to the Met.
We didn’t have a real goal once we got there but you can’t not enjoying exploring the museum. Though we haven’t made it through the whole place, Egyptian wing is my favorite so far.
We made jokes about not being stuffy about art but wanting to enjoy it all the same. Coincidently, we sat and people watched, admiring the way people were dressed. It made me smile, thinking of what Tziporah said.
Even in an art museum, we’re talking about clothes.
My kind of rainy day. What do you like to do on a rainy day in your city?
