The New Whitney Museum in Meatpacking

Designing Women

I love when my mom comes to visit.

I get to play tour guide. I keep a running list of cool things happening in the city, tidbits of historical context I know she’ll get a kick of out, and some sort of cultural activity—always.

The last time she was here for girls weekend with Yasmein. We started our outing at Bar Roma, a chic eatery I can’t wait to revisit, then took a tipsy trip to the nail salon before heading downtown to the new Whitney.

By the time we left my apartment with Yas, my mom had done her homework to make sure she was fully prepared to appreciate the significance of the museum. As we wandered up and down the six floors of beauty, she peppered in her own trivia, adding to the experience.

“Did you know that Gertrude Vanderbilt opened the Whitney Museum in 1931 because the MET wouldn’t take the 500 pieces of art she wanted to donate?” my mom narrated as we walked in. She even lived in a renovated carriage house in Greenwich Village to pursue her art while championing the work of local contemporaries. Gertrude left the museum in the hands of her daughter Flora, who passed the reigns to her daughter, also named Flora. Designing women at their best.

I had no idea.

It made me appreciate the museum—and it’s new trendy relocation in Meatpacking—that much more. The rooftop cafe where we drank in the skyline and yummy cocktails, didn’t hurt either.

That’s the thing. I loved taking this bit of history in with women, who in their own way, are securing a legacy of their own, following their own dreams.

It’s the best way to spend a weekend, exploring the city.

I love the mother/daughter dynamic that you and your mother share via your post. Love the views of the city, chic exploration look and who doesn’t love a good museum.

Thank you! Ugh, I love a good museum. It’s my favorite way to spend a Saturday. Just wondering around, drinking things in.
