Dreams Do Come True: Meet Felicia Walker Benson of ThisThatBeauty.com

Here on The City, the main objective is to define your style, define you. Follow your dreams in between. Well, here is a lady doing just that: following her dreams–stylishly.

I recently had the chance to talk to someone who’s work I have admired from a far for quite some time now. I’m going to be completely honest with you. I was really nervous! So nervous that I barely spoke during the interview (and youknow that ain’t me). I wasn’t myself, I was… awkward. But this woman dropped so many jewels it wasn’t even a decision whether I would share her with you guys.

Meet Felicia Walker Benson.

She is the Beauty Editor for Jones magazine, Social Media Beauty Director for Bergdorf Goodman and Editor-in-Chief of ThisThatBeauty. In short, she’s amazing.

Here’s Felicia wearing one of her latest obsessions, Guerlain Terracotta Khôl Kajal around her eyes.
What beauty trends are you excited for Fall 2011?
Lipsticks! For the past couple of seasons it seems someone tries to bring it back, bring it back and I think we are starting to see a steady return. We’re going to see a lot of texture, cool packaging and even anti-aging agents. The genius packaging will really separate the men from the boys. Everyone wants to be out with their friends and pull out this sleek, shiny tube of lipstick.
We know we would! How would you describe your ‘look?’
I love beautiful makeup but my core is skincare. Skin—good or bad will shine through. A lot of people would say that red lips are my signature look, but I disagree. It is a look that I enjoy and wear often but I like to switch it up. I think it’s because I wear them to press events a lot.
What products can you not get enough of right now?
Guerlain is a brand that I have been aware of for many, many years but have recently starting playing with.  The Terracotta Bronzing Powder and Khôl Kajal have take up permanent residence in my purse. I am losing my mind over Revive skincare because of its epidermal growth factor. It rejuvenates and repairs. It is very rare to use one line completely but I am.
What advice do you have for aspiring beauty editors?
This is going to sound corny but be nice, gracious and considerate. Study your industry, see the opportunity in everything. Be available, to assist or intern. Everything isn’t going to pay in dollars and cents, but it’s about the experience, like learning to be accountable to an editor, but not rely on an editor. Look at your access and your resources that make your resume more compelling. Use your brain in different ways, you can’t rely on being a great writer.
Well said! What’s the best beauty advice that you’ve ever received?
Oh, I don’t know, I received a lot. Early on my dermatologist told me to preserve my skin in my 20s.  But in terms of what I live by: Michael DeVellis, creator of The Powder Group, told me that he really enjoys working with me because I am nice and treat people with respect. You don’t have to be syrupy sweet but just keep your nose clean.
Sigh, isn’t she inspiring? Thanks so much Felicia, for your time 🙂
