So here’s the thing, fashion bloggers can get the short end of the stick, quite often. We’re collectively ruining fashion week, encouraging women to feel bad about themselves, and promoting an aspirational life that isn’t attainable.

Now, I won’t sit here and tell you that some of those things don’t exist in within the blogsphere. Because they totally do. But, sometimes, we can be the catalyst for something awesome. Like, those same points I just made could be flipped. We could say that fashion bloggers are turning fashion week into a democracy, letting women know that they aren’t alone in their insecurities or inspire their readers to chase their dreams (ahem).

This is perfectly captured by roundtable discussion that I participated in as part of a campaign with Generation Know back in February. One of my favorite parts of the discussion was each of us talking about the role books played in learning about our bodies. You can see the part of that discussion below:

What you didn’t see what that most of us have been given a copy of the American Girl book, Our Bodies, Ourselves. I wasn’t the only one who read that book, right? I see it on book shelves now and smile. I pretty sure that’s one book I’ll be sure my future, not yet thought of, daughter reads.

But for now, I can do my part to make sure that we are all projecting the images that we want to see in the media. We each have a role, whether on our blogs or the leading the discussion among our friends. If we all are the change that we want to see, we may soon see a change.
