Oh, Honey What Happened…

Oh, Honey What Happened…

You guys know that I’ve been struggling with my hair here. I don’t have a hairdresser I’m especially comfortable with (though, I did find someone at DryBar) and I don’t like a lot of different people in my head.

To be completely honest, I really want to cut it off. Like, short, short, but I’m scurred. This heat makes me nervous, I need to be able to pull it up or something. Oh, I should mention that rarely, do I do my hair myself anymore. I’ve been getting by on event blowouts at work. But my hair was dirty, I didn’t have anything planned at work so I decided that I could wash my own hair. I’d done it like twice a week when I had a relaxer. Surely I could handle it in it’s natural form.

We’re not about to get into that good hair mess but I was confident I could do it because Lisa Price (slight #humblebrag moment) not only remembered my face but complimented my curl pattern. As I told my co-workers, yall may not know, but in brown-girl world, this is EVERYTHING.

I’ve been meaning to try a bunch of new products and armed with those, head into the shower confident in my future twist-out. I should mention that I have thick hair and started this process at 10pm. By the time I was out of the shower and had twisted up all of my hair, it was well after 12am (problem number one). It was storming when I woke up (problem number two) and when I untwisted my hair it was HUGE, plus certain sections were still damp (problem number three). I pulled some back into a low bun, satisfied and even sent pictures to my mom and besties to be sure it wasn’t too big and I wouldn’t scare the people at work.

how-to-do-a-twist-out-channing-hargrove-blog-channing-in-the-city-3

I head out into the rain and wind. You see where this is going…

I finally make it to work, not thinking to check my hair when I hear, “Oh, honey! What happened?!”

I scared them. Cue wail-face emoji.

Here’s the thing though, I practically run to the bathroom only to see that it really isn’t that bad. The curls held and they’re just all over the place. It looks wild, but I don’t know that I would have seen someone (when it was clearly rainy and windy outside) with wild curly-ish hair and assumed some trauma took place. Sent another picture to my friends and mom, it’s higher, but I like it, my friends told me in group chat. “Too high,” said my mom. “Do you need money to get your hair done? Did you try to flat iron it?”

(The shade this woman throws… that’s a different post on a different day, though)

Aw, shoot. It’s that bad??

No, I told her, I wanted to see if I could do it myself. She hit me with the #oh.

Yall. Gather ’round. How are you doing your twist-outs? Is the rain what messed it up? Do I have to wash it and start over? Is my hair telling me #WildHairDontCare and I should just get over it??

how-to-do-a-twist-out-channing-hargrove-blog-channing-in-the-city-5

(And shh, but do I need to get used to the weird looks at work?? Does it look unkept? You can be honest with me, I won’t be offended, promise)

    a) Cute skirt!
    b) What did you use to twist it with? How big were the twists?
    c) Always give it ample time to dry. I stopped doing mine the night before work because sometimes overnight won’t cut it.

Thanks! I twisted it with Curls Unleashed something in a jar, I’m going to do it over the weekend next time, I think that might make a difference so it has more time to ‘set.’ I did smaller twists in the back and bigger twists on the top of my head.

Channing you are crazy! I love the way you tell your stories! Aint nothin like that mama shade on natural hair! Been there, done that. (it takes time, she will come around. *pinkypromise) Back to the hair I actually LOVE it! and this is coming from someone who has been natural for years but continues to wear my hair straight because of my work environment. Like you said, that’s another post in itself but I really do like it. It fits you and its fly!

LOL! Thany you Naseya! Girl, ain’t nothing like that Mama shade! Thank you!! It’s really sad though that it’s easier just to wear it straight, I’ve seen your hair curly, it’s gorgeous!

I think your hair looks great– big hair is everything. I have been thinking about going natural for some time now, but I am also afraid of the looks I will get at work (my office is very corporate and I am just starting my career). Do you mind sharing how you transitioned? Was it a bumpy process?

Thank you, Adya! That’s the thing, I normally do like big hair, I think this was just out of my comfort zone. It was kiiind of a bumpy process only because I didn’t learn how to care for my natural hair. I grew the relaxer out and transitioned by cutting it little by little (my head it too big for a big chop) and then one day I was forced to deal with the new growth on my own and didn’t know how, but if you do research on your own along the way, you’ll be fine, promise!

I like it. I think that a lot of people are uncomfortable with natural hair because there is a negative connotation attached to it. As a black woman, I totally understand “the struggle” of keeping your hair done everyday.(especially when you are into fashion). You can only work with what you have. They’ll get used to it! lol

I rreally like your hair!! If you want a tighter curl that will last longer try using a light pomade specially made for twisting hair or you can roller set your hair with flexable rrod rollers. Spray some humidity defying hair spray and you’ll be just fine!! You know my hair is short and natural so you always have to use products made for defying frizz, that’s the key maintaining natural hair!! Good luck!!
P.S, love the outfit and pink bag!! 🙂

I think your hair looks really cute! I was expecting to see something horrible, I like it a lot. I don’t know why some people can be so uncomfortable with hair. I LOVE big hair. I say wear it with pride, people will get over it!

I like it too! I love big hair and I have been owning that semi-wild look. Whenever my bantu-knot out looks a little cray, I pull it back in a banana and make it wilder so that it looks like that was the style I was going for. Oh, and super cute look!

It does look cute! And don’t be discouraged—I think if you start the process a little earlier the day before, and give them a chance to dry all the way through—and then avoid bad weather!—the curls will be a little more defined. The curly process can be a fun one once you get your system down!

I like it! I just think it’s new and different for you so you need a minute to get used to it and get a system down that works for you. You know I am all for big hair dont care…people pay for that shawty!

I’m over here in big hair, don’t care land. I think first thing is NEVER wash your hair when you are tired or in a rush. I’m all natural now so I have to wash my hair on a day off. Usually shampoo (just the scalp) and then I deep condition for 30 mins, rinse that out. Then I twist my hair or braid my hair. But it usually takes several hours to dry. If i’m doing it at night I twist, sleep with hair out on a satin pillow case cause if I wear a bonnet it won’t be dry in the AM now matter how I sleep.

Wash my hair on a day off, got it! Ahhh, laying the hair out to dry sounds like a really good idea, too! Now, I’m super excited to try it again! Thanks, Jessica!

it takes a while to get used to your own regimen and process to find out what works for you! i def don’t think you look like you suffered any trauma, sometimes, they just don’t understand! hahahahaha! I love using shea moisture style & curl milk in the summer bc since there’s no glycerin in it, my hair won’t shrink when in humid temperatures! I also made my own shea butter mix that has worked wonders for my hair! sorry if gave you too much! But i love that blue blazer too and need it in my closet! hahaha! hope all is well 🙂

Hey girl, hey! I used a Shea Moisture product and I really liked it, good to know about the glycerin, I didn’t realize it caused shrinkage. I’m saving this comment for future reference, that’s it wasn’t too much, it was really helpful!

Chic look. Love the skirt paired with the denim blouse. If you have thick hair, you have to give it plenty of time to dry.
